CAUL welcomes changes to Australia’s copyright laws introduced by the Copyright Amendment (Service Providers) Bill 2017 which passed both houses of Parliament on the 27th June 2018. The Bill will extend the safe harbour provisions in the Copyright Act to the disability, education, library, archive and cultural sectors.

In the 2017-18 budget, the Australian Government announced a review of the AQF, which is expected to be completed by mid 2019. The review will ensure that the AQF continues to meet the needs of students, employers, education providers and the wider community. Recently (June 2018) a contextual research review of AQF use has been released.

The Bureau of Communications and Arts Research (BCAR) will undertake this review in consultation with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).  The BCAR has released a discussion paper for stakeholder feedback. The BCAR intends to release a draft report in late 2017 and provide a final report to Government in 2018.  We are seeking feedback on the extent to which the current Code of Conduct for Copyright Collecting Societies promotes fair and efficient outcomes for both members and licensees of copyright collecting societies in Australia.

CAUL has released a statement re-affirming its commitment to the Respect.Now.Always campaign and to take action against sexual assault and harassment. Release of this statment coincided with the launch of a report Change The Course: National Report on Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment at Australian Universities (2017) by the Australian Human Rights Commission.
