In the past our technical services were localised, each campus having their own acquisitions budget and technical services unit. Currently our technical services are probably in a transitional phase as we respond to the move from print to an ever increasing number of electronic resources.We have a mix of localised and centralised services as follows: a) Electronic resources: budget, acquisition and cataloguing are centralised. b) Print Serials: budget and acquisition are centralised while cataloguing and accessioning are handled locally. c) Print monographs AV, etc.: budget, acquisition and cataloguing are handled locally. The exception is print resources required for a national course. We also have small centres throughout the territory which have no local staffed library, but who maintain small collections of print resources and who access our electronic resources.Currently operations for all centres except Alice Springs are centralised. Deakin itself is the result of mergers between the original Deakin, Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education, and Victoria College, all of whom had Technical Services Departments within their libraries (at Geelong, Burwood and Warrnambool).The decision was made very early to centralise cataloguing and acquisitions functions. Mostly this was achieved by 1996. However, until this year there was still .5 at Warrnambool assisting with serials, and approximately 6 staff at Burwood doing a range of cataloguing and serials work. These positions have now disappeared and cataloguing and acquisitions work is totally centralised.I am very interested in the reasons for the above and what people perceive as the benefits, risks and downsides of the various approaches. Happy to be pointed at relevant case studies and other readings that may help.I am also particularly interested in opinions on how this may need to change as we move more and more into the IT realm in resource acquisition and access provision. I personally feel this is inevitable as more and more core resources are online, and print declines, and will require acquisition of many new skills for those working in library technical services areas. It is interesting you raise this. The reasons for the final restructure this year take into account the following:our staff (particularly clerical support staff) have been declining in numbers and we need to have them all at one place to ensure adequate support for functionsthe work is becoming more complex and specialised and we feel it is to our benefit to have staff in one location to provide a critical mass and an environment which fosters expertise and exchange of knowledgelarger teams in one place (we also reduced the teams from 3 to 2) would provide more opportunities for multiskilling, flexibility across print and online, and integrated workflowsa lessening of emphasis on the physical collections, which basically will be reduced in the next few years. Staff at campus libraries will be responsible for the care of physical resources, doing jobs such as preparation for binding, mending and minor record fixes (and these will be Client Services staff trained by us and provided with cheat sheets)Concern was expressed by many campus staff about the loss of specialist processing staff, but the change reflects the continuing shift of resources from the physical to online. Serial ordering and invoicing (financial management) is centralised.
