Subject: [caul-list] IFLA Open Access Statement

Dear Colleague

The IFLA Statement on Open Access to Scholarly Literature and Research Documentation has just been announced at

http://www.ifla.org/V/cdoc/open-access04.html

together with a media release

http://www.ifla.org/V/press/oa240204.html

As you will recall, Cathrine and I raised a number of issues in relation to open access, instutional repositories and epublishing at our meeting in Cairns.  Since then a number of initiatives have been developing at various universities, including the epublishing workshop and launch of UTSePress here last month and the DEST Research Information Infrastructure projects being lead by ANU and Monash.

The announcement of the IFLA Statement offers an opportunity for CAUL members to further the Cairns discussion and highlight the issues across the Australian scholarly community.  I suggest that

  1. We put the IFLA Statement on the agenda for the CAUL meeting in Sydney.
  2. We resolve that CAUL endorse the Statement and agree to link to it from our website.
  3. We resolve to encourage CAUL members to seek support for the Statement from their Academic Boards or other appropriate bodies within their universities and to identify ways in which their universities can demonstrate their responses to it.
  4. We consider what initiatives CAUL might pursue (or is already pursuing) in order to advance the aims of the Statement.

Regards

Alex
