Research Infrastructure (Equipment and Facilities) Program
(RIEF)
Updated 7 May, 1997
"Grants allocated under the Research Infrastructure (Equipment
and Facilities) Program fund relatively large scale initiatives
which develop research infrastructure on a cooperative basis across
groups of institutions. Such initiatives may also involve organisations
outside the higher education sector. Although the grants are
intended primarily to support large scale cooperative projects
involving two or more institutions, individual institutions for
whom collaborative arrangements are impracticable or inappropriate
have been eligible to apply for grants since 1994. Applications
are considered on merit by a *selection panel
appointed by the Australian Research Council."

National Infrastructure Guidelines: Libraries and Information
Technology
Goals
- Providing national infrastructure support to assist research
initiatives by funding collaborative projects.
- Enhancing the national information resource infrastructure
by purchasing resources of national significance or by building
resources to be made available over time.
- Developing innovative models which facilitate information
access structures of national benefit.
- Identifying, and developing remedies for, deficiencies in
national research infrastructure for resource sharing.
- Establishing national digital collections and initiatives
for enhanced cooperation.
- Developing programmes which allow national and global access
to research infrastructure.
- Combining and extending the resources of major international
collections, for example through subject gateways, with the view
to making them available to the nation via a global virtual library.
- Providing improved access to research resources by purchasing
or building directories, indices or catalogues.
While proposals submitted must conform with the RIEFP Guidelines,
proponents should be mindful of the extent to which their proposal:
- provides national access to research resources;
- provides a more widely applicable model for developing national
access to research resources;
- fills a gap in the current research resources available to
the nation;
- enhances the ability of Australian researchers to use the
resources;
- demonstrates a capability for further development as well
as sustainability of the proposed project's outcomes
- demonstrates a capability for enduring benefit and value to
Australian scholars; and
- involves collaboration between Australian and international
institutions.
