Higher Education Funding Council for England
The HEFCE was established on 6 May 1992 under the terms of the Further and Higher Education (FHE) Act 1992. The HEFCE is a non-departmental public body operating within a policy and funding context set by the Government. The Council assumed responsibility for funding higher education in England on 1 April 1993, succeeding the Universities Funding Council and the Polytechnics and Colleges Funding Council. The Council's main functions are to advise the Secretary of State for Education on the funding needs of higher education institutions in England and to distribute funds.

Joint Funding Council's Libraries Review
(The Follett Review) December 1993 Review of Library and related provision in higher education in the United Kingdom was commissioned jointly by the Higher Education Funding Council for England; Scottish Higher Education Funding Council; Higher Education Funding Council for Wales; Department of Education for Northern Ireland . The Review Group was chaired by Professor Sir Brian Follett. ("gopher://ukoln.bath.ac.uk:7070/11/BUBL_Main_Menu/H/H2/H2C/FOLLETT")

Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC)
Funded by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council, the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the Department of Education Northern Ireland, the mission of the JISC is:

'To stimulate and enable the cost effective exploitation of information systems and to provide a high quality national network infrastructure for the UK higher education and research councils communities'. Activities supported by the JISC are organised through a number of sub-committees. These are:

UK Office for Library Networking (UKOLN)
UKOLN supports the UK library and information communities through research, network services and awareness raising in the area of network information management. It is funded by the Higher Education Funding Councils, through the Information Services Sub-Committee (ISSC) of the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), and the British Library Research and Development Department (BLRDD).
