Helen Hayes has been elected President of the Council of Australian University Librarians. CAUL has this week celebrated its 70th anniversary, commemorating the first meeting of the Conference of Australian University Librarians in Melbourne in 1928. CAUL then had six members; it now has 38. Ms Hayes is its first female leader.
Ms Hayes is currently University Librarian at the University of Melbourne. She has taken a leadership role in professional bodies including the executive of the Australian Library and Information Association, University and College Libraries Section as President, and as President of the Australian Council of Libraries and Information Services 1994-97. She was also vice president of CAUL 1993-97.
Ms Hayes is a regular presenter at conferences and workshops which relate to effecting change through quality management. She also speaks regularly on issues relating more directly to the profession such as scholarly communication. She has been invited to present papers at international conferences including the United States and China in 1998 and has undertaken work in benchmarking in Australia and overseas.
Under her leadership the University of Melbourne Library has undergone considerable cultural change and redesign to meet the changing needs of the University. The use of the Australian Quality Council framework has enabled the library to increase its efficiency and effectiveness and the Library achieved an Award for Business Excellence in 1996.
Ms Hayes states: "I am strongly committed to the aims of CAUL in support
of teaching, learning and research in Australian higher education libraries
and I believe that there are significant existing and new opportunities
for working collaboratively for our mutual benefit."
