Research
training in Australia. The House of Representatives Industry, Science
and Innovation Committee is to conduct an inquiry into the contribution
that Australian universities make to Australian research training, and
the challenges those universities face in recruiting, training and retaining
quality research staff. Responses due May 30 2008.

Review
of NCRIS Roadmap 2008. The NCRIS Committee has agreed to undertake
a review of the NCRIS Roadmap during the first half of 2008. Closing date
for responses 14 May 2008. National Collaborative Research Infrastructure
Strategy.

Regional
Telecommunications Review.
The Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee (RTIRC) is
established by the Telecommunications (Consumer Protection and Service
Standards) Act 1999 to review the adequacy of telecommunications services
in regional, rural and remote parts of Australia, and to report to the
Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy.

Review
of the Extension of Legal Deposit. The examination of the legal
deposit scheme is being undertaken jointly by the Attorney-General’s Department
and the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts.
Closing Date for Submissions is 11 January 2008.

Review
of Personal Property Securities.
The Standing Committee of Attorneys-General has decided, at the suggestion
of the Australian Attorney-General, the Hon Philip Ruddock MP, to review
the law on personal property securities.

On 11 April 2006, SCAG released
an option
paper for public consultation. The options paper invites comment
by 2 June 2006 on whether the law on personal property securities should
be changed so that registration is based on whether the substance of the
transaction is to take a security over personal property, and also on what
should be the key design features of a personal property securities register.

The Attorney-General is launching
the review with a series
of seminars.

Science,
Engineering and Technology Skills Audit. The audit will focus
on the current and future supply of and demand for graduates from the higher
education and vocational, education and training (VET) sectors and determine
the extent to which Australia’s industry research needs are being met.

e-Research
Consultation.

The
e-Research Coordinating Committee will be the primary source of expert
advice to the Government on a strategic framework for the development of
Australia’s e-Research capacity. The work of the Committee is expected
to better inform investment decisions made under existing Government initiatives
such as the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy announced
in Backing Australia’s Ability – Building Our Future through Science and
Innovation as well as funding programmes administered by Government
departments and agencies.

e-Research Strategic Framework: A Discussion Paper for public consultation

A
Research Quality Framework. The aim of the Research Quality
Framework initiative is to develop the basis for an improved assessment
of the quality and impact of publicly funded research and an effective

National
Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy. The National Collaborative
Research Infrastructure Strategy is providing $542 million over seven years
to provide researchers with major research facilities, supporting infrastructure
and networks necessary for world-class research. It will follow the major
programme of investments provided under Backing Australia’s Ability
through the Systemic Infrastructure Initiative (SII) and Major National
Research Facilities (MNRF) programme.

Australia’s
Future Using Education Technology.
The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) is undertaking
a review into the position Australian education, training and related businesses
should be taking to gain the best possible advantage in using emerging
technologies. The review will be complementary to the work being carried
out by DEST on the Action Plan for the Information Economy, due for release
later this year. 5 August 2003.
