Dear colleagues,
In response to a number of requests the following is a summary of the
results of the CEIRC survey as reported
at the last CAUL meeting.
CAUL members were asked to identify products as candidates for consortium purchasing. Twenty four responses were received. Thank you to all who responded. Some responses were very comprehensive and particularly helpful. Special thanks to UNSW and La Trobe.
The results are summarized in two categories
(1) products identified as first priorities
(2) all products/vendors identified regardless of priority.
(1) First priorities
1.Web of Science--a clear first
choice.
2.Ovid full text journals,Chemical
Abstracts, and IAC Searchbank----equal second.
(2) All vendors/products identified,regardless of priority
The top six were:
1.UMI products.
2.Web of Science.
3.Chemical Abstracts.
4.Ovid products.
5.Science Direct.
6.Firstsearch.
We also asked CAUL members to identify products which they would like to see mirrored in 1999.The top three were:
1.Academic Press journals
2.UMI products.
3.OCLC products.

Dear colleagues,
Steve recently sent out a summary of the issues which CEIRC is currently addressing. One of the most important of these is the Market Day for Datasets which will be held in conjunction with the Online Conference and The CAUL Think Tank in Sydney early next year.
Planning for this extravaganza is in process, but it would be greatly facilitated by advice from CAUL members on the priorities which they wish to assign to vendor products as candidates for consortium purchasing.
Would you please let me have as soon as possible, but no later than 20 JUNE, your list of preferred electronic information resources in priority order for purchase by the CAUL consortium. At this stage we are interested in resources that are currently available or are about to become available rather than products that are still figments of salespersons imaginations!
It would be most useful if you could provide your list electronically and if it could be arranged by vendor i.e IAC. Some products may also be available from multiple vendors in which case we will investigate other approaches to secure the best deal for CAUL.
It is understood that this will be a preliminary non-binding listing, subject of course to confirmation of the actual price and terms and conditions negotiated.
CEIRC is also considering the issue of mirroring datasets and it would assist our planning to have your response to the following questions :
1. On a scale of 1-5 please rate the following criteria for maintaining a local mirror site of datasets, including electronic journals :
# maintaining an archive of information purchased from publisher/vendor
e.g Academic Press journals.
# heavy usage material.
# full text material.
# very large files.
# datasets of interest to the majority of CAUL members.
# other---please provide details.
2. Which datasets would you most like to see mirrored in 1998/99 ?---please list in priority order.
Thank you for any assistance which you can provide.
Best wishes,
Bill.
