FirstSearch - Purchasing Search Blocks

Updated 18 July, 2006

Update 18/7/06
>>> DA continues to offer to CEIRC institutions and ANZ customers FirstSearch block purchases 4-times each year. The 'bulk offer' is made each year at the end of every February, May, August and November. We put all the ANZ library orders together into one bulk purchase so as to advantage all FirstSearch users by achieving the “biggest discount” in one bulk purchase 4-times a year.

>>> Conditions of purchase:
·         Minimum purchase is one block of 500 searches.
·         FirstSearch's per-search option gives libraries multiple simultaneous access to the attached (pay-per-search) databases.
·         Searches are valid for two years immediately following their purchase. They will then expire unless the library purchases additional access to FirstSearch under any per-search or subscription option during the initial two year period. When a library makes an additional purchase, expiration dates for all searches purchased under the per-search option will be refreshed so that they expire two years after the library's most recent purchase.

FirstSearch is distributed in Australia and New Zealand by DA Electronic Media. The purchase of blocks of searches attracts volume
discount rates, dependent on the total number of blocks in any one order.

CAUL, CONZUL and OCLC all agreed to move to a regular bulk purchase schedule, treating all CAUL & CONZUL orders as one
order. As well as keeping the price as low as possible for all universities, the schedule eases the administrative burden on everyone.

Detailed statistics provided by OCLC help universities track the trends of their usage patterns. FirstSearch administrators are also
encouraged to keep a check on their remaining search level on a regular basis, using the Administrative Module.

The various volume discount rates are as follows:
Number of Searches         Price Per Search (US$)
500 - 4,500                .98
5,000 - 30,000             .88
30,5000 +                  .78
(NOTE: 1 block = 500 searches. Orders must be in blocks of 500 searches.)

The cut-off dates for the receipt of orders are:
31st January (searches available in February)
30th April (searches available in May)
31st July (searches available in August)
31st October (searches available in November)
(NOTE: The normal turnaround time for the supply of searches is 2 - 3 weeks from the cut-off date.)

Orders must be received on an OCLC FirstSearch Order Form (available from DA Electronic Media). Dianne Marshall, from DA
Electronic Media, sends email reminders throughout each ordering period, and keeps the FirstSearch email list advised of the level of
searches being received.

URGENT ORDERS: From time to time a university may need to top up their searches urgently, without waiting for a scheduled purchase
date. Such orders must be sent to DA Electronic Media, marked as URGENT - NOT TO WAIT FOR BULK PURCHASE. Such
individual orders will be charged at the prevailing rate for the number of searches.
