Data management and the role of the data librarian Tuesday, 24 November 2015

The importance of data as a research output is emphasised in the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, Chapter 2 of which is devoted solely to data and defining the responsibilities of researchers and their institutions.

In any university, institutional responsibility for data management is likely to be spread across a number of areas: research office, IT support services and library. Other areas, such as archives, might also be involved.

Provision of collection level metadata and provision of support services such as data management training, discovery and access, data sharing and outreach

As data management increases in importance, new professional groups of information specialists and data librarians are appearing.

ANDS, the Australian National Data Service, was established to develop the Research Data Commons designed to make better use of Australia's research outputs.  A key role for ANDS is the provision of support for information specialists and data librarians throughout Australia.

The ANDS Data management guide is designed for both researchers and research support staff. Other ANDS Guides provide information about different aspects of data management, including data citation, digital object identifiers (DOIs),  ethics and metadata.

In early 2014, ANDS developed a Guide to filling in the data management section in ARC grant applications specifically for researchers. This was in response to open access policies and requirements of the ARC.

In 2013, CAUL endorsed the AusGOAL Framework for the licensing of research data.

There are excellent local and overseas resources which can be helpful in supporting data management.  See, for example,
